December and it’s flippin’ freezing

My word it was cold this morning, so I thought I’d leave it until the day warmed up and it got up to a mahoosive -1. Joy abounded! At 2pm ish I decided that if I was going to go, I’d better get on with it and got my leggings on, warm socks, shoes, baselayer, tee shirt and winter cycling top (not the waterproof one) and got my Giant out.

After last month’s shameful mileage showing, I thought that I had better show willing and get over 8 miles done. Also, this is the first ride of our new cycling year. I can’t remember why we ride from December 1st to November 30th, I’m sure that there is a good reason but I’m stuffed if I can think of it now. My brain is still numb from being outside when there is a perfectly good woodburner and comfy chair inside.

I rode from home along the B1108 to Skipping Block Corner and then back on myself to Barnham Broom, through the village and turned right as if to go home. Instead of going home (tempting, very tempting) I went straight on and down the gentle hill towards Carleton Forehoe. Huge mistake, it was OK for the first 150 yards and then turned into an ice rink. Very slippery indeed, I slowed right down and kept to the middle of the road, where the rough surface is. I crept along there until I got to the Barnham Broom Road and headed North back to Barnham Broom.

Once more through the village and instead of turning for home (tempting, very tempting. Again) I headed straight on to Barford village and turned up Back lane and then on to B1108, up the hill to home. 10.74 miles is not very far but in -1 weather with ice still at the side of the roads and very attractive frost everywhere, 55 minutes is quite long enough out there. I really need neoprene overshoes but I don’t have the money to buy them. I have thermal socks but they don’t keep the cold out for more than half an hour or so. My hands, in their sealskinz gloves, were nice and warm and toasty, my legs and body were not to bad but I still cannot feel my feet. I have defrosted enough to think about getting in the bath though.

I haven’t set any sort of mileage challenge for myself for this month or year yet. I’ll give it some thought over the month. December is my busy month, work wise so I’ll get the bike out, when I can and if its not raining. In January I shall think about the annual mileage that I would like to achieve. I know that I will definitely be doing more than last year though.

About RosieRosie

RosieRosie is a woman of a 'certain age' - whatever the hell that is supposed to mean, known. I feel about 26. I have no idea what I look like as some older woman keeps getting in the way when I look in the mirror. Separated from husband but dating a nice chap at the moment. I have a proper wanderlust and have finally moved - using the housing exchange system from - where I started in Inverness, down to Cornwall and back up to the Flatlands and Big Sky Country. It's taken since September 2011, when I left Inverness until June 2018 to get to somewhere that I really like. That's not too shoddy with a swap here and a swap there, saving up again for each move. Not ruling out going home to Norwich if necessary. Time will tell. For now my mates are just a 60 minute or so, drive down the road. Good cycling trails too, for when I can't handle the road and want a bit of nature. I love my bikes, I love my dog and I love guitars. They all keep my busy.
